Renovations Continue at Pittsgrove Township Senior Center

Senior Nutrition Program To Relocate

Renovations to the Pittsgrove Township Senior Center are progressing on schedule. After a construction progress meeting, Mayor Peter Voros commented “we are looking forward to completion of this phase of the renovations by the end of this year.”

This is the second phase of reconstruction for the Senior Center, which bore the name Oddsfellow’s Hall in recognition of the organization that built and utilized the facility until the Township acquired it from them in 2004. This phase of reconstruction involves installation of a new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, remodeling of the men’s restroom, upgrading the electrical service to the building, installation of gas hot water heating system and other cosmetic fixtures. The work is being funded by a Small Cities Grant of $400,000 from the Department of Community Affairs and a 20% grant match by the Township.

“Utilizing state grant funds is an excellent way to leverage our money and bring our communities facilities up to date” stated Deputy Mayor, Jeff Ridgway. “It is like investing a quarter and getting a dollar in return.”

The Township has applied for a third Small Cities Grant Block Grant for Public Facilities with Special Clientele which they hope to be awarded by the end of this year so that renovations to the exterior of the building, roofing, lighting fixtures, ceiling and fire protection system can be completed.

During the ongoing renovations, the Senior Club and Senior Congregate Nutrition Site have been relocated to other facilities in the community. The Senior Social Club, which meets monthly on the third Monday at 10:00 am- 12:30 pm, will continue to meet at the Centerton Country Club until further notice.

The Senior Nutrition Program, which is run by Salem Healthcare will continue to be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 9:30 – 12:30. Starting October 3rd. and until further notice, the senior nutrition site will meet at Centerton Country Club on Almond Road. Centerton Country Club’sOwner and Operator, Lou Ferettii, commented that he is anxious to host the seniors as it is part of his on-going commitment to give back to the community which he serves.

“We are greatly appreciative of our community leaders who have opened their doors to our senior citizen programs during the on going renovations to our Senior Center,” stated Christine Seeney, committeewoman.” With their assistance we will be able to continue to provide educational and enriching activities for our senior citizens, as well as a healthy balanced meal.”

Senior citizens throughout Salem County are welcome to join these programs and are also reminded that transportation services are available to and from these programs thru the Salem County Office on Aging’s Specialized Transportation Program.
